2003 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, Domaine J.-F. Coche Dury

2003 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, Domaine J.-F. Coche Dury

I have had this wine twice in the last few years (2012) and have had two distinctly different experiences with it as the bottle tasted in 2012 displayed plenty of malic/green apple characters along with a somewhat tough and stiff palate impression that is highly inconsistent with the style of the 2003 vintage (that bottle was rated 85?). However this most recent bottle was much more typical with its softly woody and overtly ripe nose that speaks of mildly tropical infuences. There is fine richness to the big-bodied, concentrated and opulent flavors that possess excellent volume and ample amounts of palate coating sap, all wrapped in a long and reasonably well-balanced finale. This is actually quite a good 2003 and while it’s not my style that’s not the fault of the wine but rather the dominating vintage. Note that while this will hold for years to come I don’t foresee much in the way of additional development. 92 points, Burghound
